Community Baptist Church Moving Into A Tent

Effective June 1, 2009 Community Baptist Church is moving away from Technology Court (after 14 years) and are moving into a tent. A tent set up near the new church construction site. Thereby officially making the new construction site at 4100 Center Street, South Riding, Virginia the new church for the church body.

The tent was set up on Friday, May 29 in the parking lot just to the West of the church construction site between the several thunderstorms that came through the area. Fortunately, there were no heavy winds and everyone were good sports about it.

Many of the church people came out to help in the tent raising including the Pastor, his wife Betty and my wife Bunny hanging onto the pole.

A number of the ladies and younger generation came out to help in the tent raising.

There were a few manly men around to help out and, as you can see, the tent is very close to the new church. The church family will have a bird’s eye view of the construction during the month of June.

The tent is in plain view of the South Riding downtown center and very visible to everyone who goes by.

The church plans to use the tent for the month of June. The church’s special 14th year celebration will be held in the tent from Sunday, June 14th to Tuesday, June 16th. Everyone is invited to attend these special services celebrating the new church building and the church’s 14 years of existence.

The church is planning on moving into the new building by the first week in July. However, should this be delayed the church has reserved some rooms in the South Riding community center for the month of July, should that be necessary.

We would like to ask everyone’s prayers that the new building will be completed according to the Lord’s plans for Community Baptist Church.

The Restrooms as of May 15, 2009

Hi, we have been working on tiling the church’s new restrooms for both men and women. This has taken a couple of weeks and is about 90% done at this point. Mr. Josh Apel from Choice Baptist Church in Fredericksburg, Virginia came up and volunteered his time helping Scott Johnson setting the tile. Josh gave us two very good days and his help was much appreciated. Scott also volunteered his time and was in charge of the project.

They began by doing the floors in both the men’s and women’s restrooms.

Josh was also a big help to Scott by helping in the more intricate detail in the ladies’ restroom. The tile in the ladies’ restroom is a little more intricate than the men’s restroom.

They had some local help from CBC in the form of Bill Johnson and Jim Olsen and others as time went on. Bill and Jim were very helpful.

Jim’s smiling face was always welcome, even with a wet cloth in his hand as he cleaned the grout residue off the ladies’ restroom

As the tiling project progressed other volunteers in the forms of Mike Cash and Keith Calhoun were very helpful. The more hands the lighter the work (well maybe) and the fellowship was great.

The four musketeers worked well together and had a lot of fun. At least, I think they did.

Mitchell Calhoun also helped in the project and enjoyed working with everyone and enjoyed their fellowship. Scott and Mitchell are pictured below working on the men’s restroom walls.

A workday is planned for tomorrow, Saturday, May 16th to bring the project closer to a finish.

I think everyone who attends the Community Baptist Church will enjoy the efforts of the above-mentioned men and other men and women who are now helping in the washing and cleaning of the restrooms.

Please keep the church construction in your prayers as much needs to be done in hopes of moving into the new church facility by the end of June.

Our Colonial Columns – April 17, 2009

The Baptist Builders put up the colonial columns (2 full columns and 2 half columns) on the North Side of the building about a week ago.

This past week they have been preparing the four columns on the West side of the building,.

There was a lot of prep work that had to be done to the columns before they could be placed around the metal columns.

Each column’s base had to be prepared. The base of the columns will be covered with “Harristone” to match the wainscot of the building.

When they had them ready they were placed on the bases.

The appearance of our church is slowly changing. Soon it will look like the picture.

Notice the sand colored mortar that was first placed on the building on Friday, April 17, 2009. Soon the red brick effect will begin to appear. Also notice the windows. How many homes in South Riding have windows similar to these?

Bible Baptist Fellowship Builders

Are a group of volunteers who travel around helping Baptist Churches in their construction needs. They are missionaries to churches in the USA. From left to right these are Brent, Ron and Charles. They are planning on being here until the end of April.

The BBFB men and their families have parked their RVs at the construction site. They have a very short commute to work each morning,

They have been here for about three weeks and have already worked on a number of projects. They organized the installation of our church steeple.

They helped the electrician in pulling a lot of electrical wires throughout the building. They have also installed some of the colonial columns on the North Entrance.

They have installed two columns. There will also be two half columns against the wall that will also hide the down spouts for the drainage from the porch roof.

In the near future they will be installing the four columns on the West Entrance. But, before they could do that, the concrete footings had to be enlarged.

This past week or so they have been framing the walls in the fellowship and nursery areas. These areas were not scheduled in the construction for Phase One.

We serve our coffees in the future 2 - 5 year old area. This area is also planned to be an overflow area to the fellowship area.

The walls have been formed for the nursery bathroom area.

I’m sure the BBFB men will be involved in a number of other construction areas before the end of April.

EIFS – March 27, 2009

Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems (EIFS) are multi-layered wall systems that are often referred to as synthetic stucco. EIFS literally wrap the exterior in an energy-efficient thermal blanket. There are three layers to EIFS: 1) Inner Layer-Foam insulation board that’s secured to the exterior wall surface 2) Middle Layer-A polymer and cement base coat that’s applied to the top of the insulation, then reinforced with glass fiber mesh 3) Exterior Layer-A textured finish coat.

And that is the outside of your new building. The East wall of the building is basically finished as it will not be finished in a brick format and is a tan and cream color. The white area at the bottom (the wainscot) will be finished with simulated field stones (Harristone).

The rest of the building will have a simulated brick finish which was just finalized yesterday and you should begin to see the brick finished on the other walls in the neat future.

However, the East wall is looking pretty good. The cornice moldings are formed Styrofoam that is covered with EIFS. I have been joking with the workers that they are not construction workers but artists.

Look at the detail of the molding along the wall and the windows. All of that is Styrofoam covered with EIFS.

I think the corners look neat. When you tap on the walls it feels soft and sounds hollow and that is one of the descriptions of EIFS. But they say it is very durable and has a very high insulation value.

The EIFS will wrap around the building and on the other walls they will begin to apply the brick appearance finish.

Scaffolding is already in place on the South and West sides of the building to begin to apply the brick EIFS finishes.

Some scaffolding has also been wrapped around to cover some of the South side of the building.

We have become accustomed over the past several weeks to the white appearance of our building. We now have a couple of variations of tans, creams, and white on the East side. In the very near future we will begin to see the red brick appearance begin to appear.

Continue to pray for the workers that they will stay safe. The building looks nice with the steeple, doesn’t it? Start to imagine how it will look with the read brick and, soon, the colonial columns.

The Steeple Is Up – March 21, 2009

A crew of construction type men (six) from a church in Fredericksburg joined the Baptist Builders (3) to place the new steeple (45 ft. high weighing around 2,000 lbs) on top of the new church building which is around 40 ft. high or a total of around 85 ft. from the ground to the top of the cross. They were supported by a lot on-lookers and well-wishers from Community Baptist Church and some local sight seers.

They started with the base or foundation. It looked huge on the ground. But, as you well see it was not huge on top of the building.

This base was moved over to the building to prepare for lifting into position.

A huge crane was used to lift the base into the air so that it could be moved to its position on the foyer roof.

In fact the base was moved up and down about three times as the base was placed on the roof top to measure its position. The base had to be carefully leveled as any small variation at the base could result in the top of the steeple being off center by several feet. The men did a very good job as you will see in the final product. Holes had to be cut through the metal roof into the steel girders to secure the base and ultimately the steeple firmly to the roof top.

After the base was secured a ladder and two men had to be inside the base to get ready to receive the remainder of the steeple components.

The steeple is made up of five parts – the base, the glass tower, a box on top of that, the spire, and the cross. These four parts had to be prepared to be lifted on top of the base.

One of the glass panels had to be removed so that the men inside the base on top of the building could climb up into the top parts of the steeple as it is placed on top of the base, secure any bolts and nuts, and then be able to exit the steeple to get down from the roof.

Of course, some of the CBC on-lookers and well-wishers had to inspect the processes as they are being enacted.

The cross was bolted to the top of the pointy thing (spire)

which is then placed on top of the box that is placed on top of the piece with the glass panels, very carefully.

This unit, which now includes the top four components, is lifted up in the air and moved to be placed on top of the base.

This is what we had been looking for all day: the completed steeple arriving at its final resting place on top of our new church building as the men inside the base carefully move it into its proper position.

And, finally, the steeple is in place and the men could exit the steeple via the open window on the back side of the steeple.

And the well-wishers admire the results. A beautifully positioned and very straight steeple that displays the cross symbol of the Gospel of Christ that can be seen for miles in all directions.

The Second Floor and Mechanical Roof – March 14, 2009

This past week they were able to pour concrete for the second floor using a long hose that pumped concrete from outside the building.

This area will be the future church offices and some classrooms.

They also poured the area for the balcony and mezzanine.

The area around the mechanical roof, that is hidden by the mansard roof, was basically finished during the week. There will be nine A/C and heating units installed up here eventually. This is looking West.

And this is looking East.

At the end of the week they started weather sealing the mechanical roof by putting down two layers of styrofoam and a rubber membrane.

They also started several functions on the inside of the building this week which will be covered in more detail in the construction photos. Much of the roof drainage plumbing, internal walls, and internal electrical work was done.

They also did much of the A/C and Heating ducting during the week.

They also set up scaffolding for the EIFS.on the East outside wall. This will be interesting to track over the next several weeks as they put up the EIFS brick appearance on the outside of the building.

February Ended with a Concrete Bang

The concrete trucks and a truck with a long hose, came to the West Entrance of the building. Liquid concrete went in one end of that hose and came out of the other end.

Well, a kind of a grayish, sluggish, liquid. And,man, did the workers have fun with it. I'm sure some boys and, maybe some girls, from the church would have liked to joined them.

They waded in with their rubber boots and played with it all day. The concrete workers worked very hard with that liquid concrete

to create for us a solid concrete floor that covered the South side of the building which includes the Sanctuary area, underneath the balcony, and the foyer areas.

Then the next day the concrete trucks and the long hose came again but this time to the North entrance of the building.

solid concrete floor that is just under 13,000 sq ft that will be the main floor for Community Baptist Church,.

The second floor will be poured in March. But as of the first of March we have a concrete floor for the first floor and can now begin with some of the inside work.

We thank the Lord for those who have worked so hard to get us this far along with our building program.

A Week of Odds and Ends - February 21, 2009

A lot was done this past week, but it was not always easily visible or photogenic. In rough work, things seem to pop up and become visible. However, the finish work does not always stand out, but it has to be done.

The plumbers did a lot on the sewer and water lines. The electricians did a little on the service entrance and ran some temporary lights on the inside of the building. Generally, those things that have to be done before the concrete can be poured.

The roofers worked a lot on the Mansard roof and around the mechanical roof getting it ready to be sealed and waterproofed.

The steel people welded little steel mushrooms (every few inches) all over the second floor to prepare for the concrete.

The roofers also worked on the ridge cap along the top of the sanctuary roof. But wind continued to be a problem last week and they had to be careful getting up on that high peak. They did some of the roofing over the West porch. The foyer roofing has yet to be done.

They were able to complete the roofing over the North entrance. The silhouette of the building is beginning to take form.

This coming week they will continue to prepare the two floors for concrete and hopefully, will be able to pour some concrete this coming week.

The weather forecast looks good for the week.

The building is closing in - February 14, 2009

A lot was accomplished this past week. We got some good material for the Appreciation Board and we appreciate very much those who contributed to the collection. The workers are observed quite often reading the material. It is an excellent witness to everyone who walks by.

The plumbers were in and got a great deal done on the plumbing. This must be done before the concrete floor can be poured.

The electricians were also in and worked on forming and pouring concrete for the main electrical service to the building and also other electrical items.

Some of the electricians enjoying lunch Friday provided by the Hospitality Committee.

The roofers got started on roofing the foyer and are expecting to finish this coming week.

The Koreteck (white styrofoam) walls are on. The small windows (except for four in the NW corner) have been installed. The store fronts in the North and West entrances have yet to be installed. The roofers still have work to do on the area over the foyer and West and North entrances.

The big windows in the south side of the sanctuary have yet to be installed.

The small doors in the maintenance entrances have yet to be installed.

The roofers have some trim work to do over the main sanctuary and around the mansard roof.

But, we are getting very close to having the building dried in.

Please continue to pray that the weather remains good so that we can get the concrete floors poured and the building completely dried in by the end of February. This will be a big step in moving into the next phases of our building construction.

A good week for volunteers - February 7, 2009

This past week we were able to make a styrofoam cutter out of scrap lumber, nickel chromium wire, a battery charger, and some electrical connectors. It works great.

We were able to cut a lot of polystyrene (which is what the Koreteck is made out of) styrofoam this past week.

Saturday was a very productive volunteer day at the construction site as a good crew came out during the day and gave the construction site a good picking up. The trash dumpster was overflowing. They even mopped the floor in the construction trailer. (I'm sorry that I forgot to take pictures).

We also had a good crew helping to fit and cut the styrofoam to choir riser specs.

As of the end of day Saturday, we had cut styrofoam to complete 22 Choir risers (a total of 132 pieces of styrofoam) plus the prototype or 23 risers.

That leaves us with needing to cut styrofoam for 7 more risers times 3 layers of styrofoam times 2 pieces per layer or 42 pieces of styrofoam. We still have several stacks of styrofoam yet to be cut.

So at this moment we feel that we have enough styrofoam to complete the requirements of the 30 Choir Risers desired. After the foam cutting we then need to glue (Liquid Nails Heavy Duty Construction Adhesive, polystyrene friendly) the layers together, cut the plywood needed and then assemble everything together. A great deal done, but still a ways to go, but looking good. We trust a product that the church will safely enjoy for many years to come.

Mid-Winter is here - January 31, 2009

The church has a need for moveable choir risers in the new sanctuary. The new building is being constructed with Koreteck panels made out of very strong 6 inch thick styrofoam and steel. It was discovered that the Koreteck panels were packed with scrap styrofoam (no steel) that we would have had to pay to have disposed. All of a sudden one and one came together and we have a supply of material to build our choir risers very inexpensively and with a light weight. We also have 18 sheets of plywood and 18 16 ft. 4 by 4s from the pallets.

Se we measured and decided on a moveable choir riser that will be 6 ft. long, 3 ft. wide, and 3 layers of styrofoam high or about 19 inches with plywood and we want 30 of them. While as a general rule the stryofoam is long enough (many pieces are 15 ft long) the pieces are seldom over 2 ft. wide. As each layer requires 2 pieces of styrofoam or (30 risers times 3 layers times 2 pieces) 180 pieces of styrofoam. That is a lot of styrofoam and a lot of cutting.

We have a lot of scrap styrofoam in about every size and shape you can imagine. Some stacked outside in the parking lot

And we have some stacked on the inside of the building.

So far we have cut the styrofoam to complete 4 risers or 24 pieces. At the construction site we have started cutting the styrofoam to 6 ft. lengths and have cut 74 pieces so a total of 98 pieces have been cut out of the 180 pieces needed. A little over half way.

Of course, once we complete cutting the 180 pieces to length (6 ft) we then need to cut to width (3 ft.). Then the 30 risers of 3 styrofoam layers and plywood tops and bottoms need to be assembled. So quite a lot of work is yet to be done. But a very worth while project for the church.

Please pray that we will have enough scrap styrofoam to complete the 180 pieces needed and the labor necessary to cut and assemble the risers..

A New Year - 1-14-09

A new year is beginning, the holidays are over and the rains are slowing down and much visible progress is being made on the building.

The steel frame has been very visible for some time and we have all enjoyed watching it form and become something we can identify. Laying about the parking lot for several days have been some green steel roof panels and Koretech (6" of Styrofoam with a steel center) paneling.

Steel forms the building and gives it strength, Koretech is the outside walls, and the roof is the steel roofing panels. This past week or so the workers have been preparing to install these items on the steel framing. There will be insulation (yellow) underneath the steel roof panels that is held in place by a netting (pink).

The koretech (as of 1-14-09) has been placed on the North and East sides of the building.

This worker is placing the netting on the roof in preparation for the insulation and green roof panels. The netting also functions as a safety net for the workers (anyone volunteering for the job?).

As you can see, with the installation of the Koretech and roofing our church silhouette is changing.

Here you can see them installing the roofing panels on top of the building. Please pray for the safety of the workers.

Please continue to pray for good weather over the next couple of weeks so we can get the building dried in. Once this is done the plumbers can come in and do their part and then the concrete slabs for the 1st and 2nd floors can be formed.

The construction is planned to be completed no later than the end of May, 2009.

What happened to the Graffiti? 12-11-08

We all gathered on Sunday, November 16, 2008 and wrote holy graffiti on the steel that was laying on the ground. Well, most of us. There were a few brave souls that wrote on the upright steel.

Most of that steel is now in the huge erector set called our church building. And what a spider web of steel it is. So where is your graffiti? Well, we cannot show it all but here are a few examples.

It was placed like that so that the passengers in the planes landing at Dulles could read it. I thought that was nice of the steel workers.

This was placed so that God could read it and bless our little ones. We thank all of the children who braved the cold to place their hands and feet on that very cold steel.

A number of messages are displayed around the future fellowship hall and we know that "Lucas Loves God".

Our Lord's Name "Jesus" is well represented in the beginning of this hymn.

And we know that this is the home of the "Community Baptist Church" body who want this church building to glorify our Lord in this community.

I think this was added later and it looks real nice. I think this and all of the graffiti, no matter where located, is presenting a gospel witness to those who walk through the construction site. Some of the places will be a little easier to read when we add the second floor.

This is the building as it appeared this past Wednesday (12-10-08). This is the north entrance from the parking lot. It is really beginning to look like something is happening doesn't it? The dreams of many for a number of years is happening. We ask for God's blessing on each of you for your part to bring your church to this point.

Please continue to pray for the church construction,. We are having some rainy days now and snow and ice is coming,. Please pray that God will give us the weather to get the building dried in as soon as possible and continue to ask for God's protection on the workers.

Homeschoolers - 11/24/2008

We had a very special day at the Construction site on Monday, November 24, 2008 as some of the church’s homeschooling families sponsored a special day for the workers.

The homeschoolers sponsored the Appreciation Board with several of the homeschoolers and homeschooling moms providing the materials for the board and arranging it on the board in a general Fall theme.

Our workers on this particular day were steel workers from Pennsylvania who are assembling that erector set of steel. We took a group picture of all of the workers and homeschoolers together.

and then the homeschoolers sang a song for the entertainment of the workers and all of us.

They were accompanied by two talented roaming minstrels.

Everyone seemed to have fun and enjoyed having the homeschoolers entertain them. The homeschoolers also sponsored a lunch for the workers which the workers always seem to appreciate.

After lunch Bill Beals, the Senior Project Manager for Dominion Construction Group, gave an educational talk to some of the older homeschoolers helping them to understand the world of construction.

We thank the moms for allowing their homeschoolers to have a little time off and come and entertain us on this day.

Everyone seemed to have a good time and the homeschoolers were a testimony to the construction workers and to the rest of us.

Building Task Force Committee

Overview Since Start of Construction – October 1, 2008

As this is our first posting to this “Blog” we would like to start with a brief overview of the construction to the end of November. On October 1, 2008, our building lot and the land to the west of our property looked liked this.

Now it is nearing the end of November, 2008 and our building lot and the land to the west of our property, after two months of construction, looks like this.

What has been done?

The building footings and foundations (most of this under ground) for walls and pillars have been formed with concrete, including a 13’ deep wall on the east side to protect a major sewer line.

The elevator base has been formed with concrete.

The parking lot has been dug up on the north side to install the major sewer line, fire water line, and main water line to and from the building (all of this underground).

The storm drain pipes have been put into place (most of this underground).

The sanctuary part of the building has been framed with steel.

They are beginning to frame with steel the classroom and balcony area in front of the sanctuary and into the foyer area.

A lot that can be seen.

A lot that cannot be seen.

Luke 6:48 says “He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock, and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house and could not shake it for it was founded upon a rock.”

Well we saw the gray rock at the bottom of that 13’ hole. We are trusting God that this building and the church will be built upon the physical solid rock and the solid rock of God’s word.

The Ministry of Construction teams have been very busy.

The Hospitality Team has been faithfully serving, to the workers, coffee, drinks, and some goodies twice a week and a meal at Friday noon. The workers have expressed much appreciation for this courtesy.

The Appreciation Board and its contents have been very well received and have been very visible to all who visit the site.

The Prayer Team has been bringing the needs of the construction to the many prayer warriors of the church and are backing the construction with their prayers.

The Volunteer Team has had one project and are looking for more opportunities as the construction progresses.

Please keep our Publicity Team in your prayers as we still need a leader for this committee.

Please keep the church and its construction phase in your prayers, particularly for the safety of all.
